HOW MUCH DEBT DOES DALIAN WANDA HAVE? Dalian Wanda Group, owned by China's once-richest man Wang Jianlin, is the country's largest commercial property developer managing many shopping malls, offices and hotels across the country. WHAT IS NEXT FOR DALIAN WANDA? If Wanda Commercial manages this repayment, the next deadline will be a 3.5 billion yuan onshore bond due on July 29. "The extreme volatility in Dalian Wanda's bond prices shows how fearful and emotional the market is at this point."

The developer defaulted in late 2021 and has been struggling to complete projects and repay its many suppliers and creditors. After announcing an offshore debt restructuring plan in March, it is now garnering support to complete the process. Charles Macgregor, head of Asia of Lucror Analytics, said he was not optimistic about Evergrande's results. Analysts expect Evergrande to post steep losses for 2021 and 2022, years in which its contracted sales fell to 443 billion yuan and 31.7 billion yuan respectively, versus 723 billion yuan in 2020. Evergrande's shares listed in Hong Kong have been halted from trading since March 21 last year, pending the financial results and an investigation into a 13.4 billion yuan of seized deposits of a unit.

REUTERS/Danish Siddiqui/File PhotoCHENNAI, July 13 (Reuters) - A decision by Taiwan's Foxconn (2317.TW) to withdraw from a $19.5 billion semiconductor joint venture with Vedanta (VDAN.NS) is a "credit negative" for the Indian conglomerate's UK parent Vedanta Resources, debt research firm CreditSights said on Thursday. CreditSights had previously expected a "minimal credit impact" on Vedanta Resources based on the old arrangement, as Volcan, Vedanta's holding entity was undertaking the semiconductor investments. CreditSights also expects further strain on credit metrics and free cash flows for both Vedanta Resources and India's Vedanta with Foxconn's exit also resulting in a loss of a partner to split manufacturing costs. CreditSights maintained its "buy" rating on Vedanta Resources' bonds saying its refinancing outlook for some debt maturities have improved, helped by $1.3 billion of fresh loan fundraisings.

There are some signs that the broader $275 billion AT1 market is recovering. Reuters GraphicsLast month, Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (8316.T) was the first major global bank to sell AT1s since the March rout. With time, analysts expect UBS to sell AT1s aplenty to meet its capital requirements. It has a 700 million Singapore dollar ($755 million) AT1 bond repayable in November followed by a heftier $2.5 billion bond in January. RATINGS GAMEInvestor appetite for a UBS AT1 could also hinge on its future credit profile.
"We believe this will allow all of our businesses to become more agile, enhance their business decision-making, and respond faster to market changes," CEO Daniel Zhang told investors. "Alibaba Group will be in the nature of a holding company that is the controlling shareholder of the business group companies," Zhang said. When asked about the timeline of Alibaba's restructuring, Zhang said the "strategy and business planning for the business groups will commence immediately." CFO Tony Xu said separating Alibaba's entities would allow it to determine the performance of each business. "We believe that the market is the best litmus test so each business group company can pursue independent fundraising and IPOs as and when they are ready after going public," he said.
Swiss CoCo shakeout may yet help bank regulators

LONDON, March 22 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Switzerland’s forced merger of Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) with UBS (UBSG.S) has caused a real stink. European regulators on Monday mobilised to calm debt investors after Swiss authorities chose to write off 16 billion Swiss francs of Credit Suisse’s Additional Tier 1 CoCos. Both the Bank of England and European regulators pledged on Monday to respect the bank rescue hierarchy that says shareholders should lose money before debt. A case in point: only last year the already creaking Credit Suisse chose to redeem a bond. HONG KONG, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Chinese tourists are returning to Macau in hordes after Beijing lifted its restrictions on travel to the world's biggest gambling hub, lifting stocks and bonds of casino operators as investors bet on a boom in their revenues. The casino operators' bonds are in demand as investors look for exposure to Chinese junk debt but seek to avoid property developers' bonds. Those bonds account for a large chunk of the high-yield market and the developers' fortunes remain under a cloud after a crackdown by Beijing. Among the three U.S. casino groups that operate in Macau, CreditSights has an "outperform" rating on Wynn Macau bonds due to higher yields. Sands China's (1928.HK) 10-year bond, rated at investment grade by Moody's Investors Service and Fitch, trades at a yield of 6.59%, compared with 9.3% on Wynn Macau's bond of the same maturity.
The sprawling Adani Group, which he founded over 30 years ago, has established interests in industries ranging from logistics to mining. “We view this as validation of our findings on offshore stock parking by Adani,” Hindenburg founder Nate Anderson said on Twitter. In its report, Hindenburg had alleged that “offshore shells and funds tied to the Adani Group comprise many of the largest ‘public’ holders of Adani stock.”An Adani Group spokesperson declined to comment. Meanwhile, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, said Thursday it has “for all practical purposes…fully divested,” from the Adani companies. The loans were backed by shares in Adani Ports, Adani Green Energy and Adani Transmission.
MUMBAI, Feb 7 (Reuters) - The exposure of Indian banks to the embattled Adani Group is "insufficient in itself" to present a substantial risk to the credit profiles of these lenders, Fitch Ratings said in a note on Tuesday. Fitch estimated that loans to all Adani group entities generally account for 0.8%-1.2% of total lending for Indian banks rated by the agency, equivalent to 7%-13% of total equity. SBI's total exposure was 0.9% of its total loan book, or around 270 billion rupees, Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara has said. Additionally, most of the bank's exposure to the Adani Group was secured by completed and cash-generating assets while the rest of the exposure was to on-schedule, under-construction projects, said CreditSights. Fitch, however, cautioned that Indian state banks could face pressure to provide refinancing for Adani entities if foreign banks scale back their exposure or investor appetite for the group's debt weakens in global markets.
Maike's absence has encouraged some direct trade between sellers and buyers in the market but they face challenges. Fitch Solutions expects China's copper consumption to rise 4.4% this year, after just 1.5% growth in 2022. Anti-pandemic restrictions had also prolonged smelter maintenance and curtailed copper production growth last year, especially in the Guangdong area. Some smelters there have hiked their offers for 2023 copper premiums to 300 yuan a tonne, up from 200 yuan a tonne last year, a Shanghai-based trader said. While Maike's disappearance from the import market has been blamed for disrupting supplies and pricing, China's refined copper imports increased 6.6% in 2022, according to customs data.
So, how did a relatively young and small New York financial research firm manage to bring the Adani juggernaut to a juddering halt? Much of his fortune is tied up in the sprawling Adani Group, which he founded over 30 years ago. This is not the first time analysts have expressed fear that the rapid expansion of Adani businesses comes with huge risk. In its response, Adani Group said that the “leverage ratios” of its companies “continue to be healthy and are in line with the industry benchmarks in the respective sectors. Adani Group “is not going anywhere,” said Rajat Sharma, founder of financial advisory firm Sana Securities.
The report, which comes days ahead of a $2.5 billion share offering by flagship firm Adani Enterprises (ADEL.NS), sent shares in Adani group firms sliding. It also said that seven Adani listed companies have an 85% downside on a fundamental basis due to what it called "sky-high valuations". Adani Chief Financial Officer Jugeshinder Singh told media on Jan. 21 "Nobody has raised debt concerns to us. Refinitiv data shows that debt at all the Adani Group's seven key listed Adani companies exceeds equity, with debt at Adani Green Energy Ltd (ADNA.NS) exceeding equity by more than 2,000%. Shares in Adani Enterprises surged 125% in 2022, while other group companies, including power and gas units, rose more than 100%.

HONG KONG, Jan 25 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hindenburg Research is going after big game, with devastating timing. Now he is taking aim at the world’s third richest man, Gautam Adani, and his $230 billion infrastructure-focused empire. It follows a tussle last year with Fitch Group after its research outfit, CreditSights, called Adani “deeply overleveraged”. Most of the companies in the Adani group – nine of which are listed – are too closely held, massively overvalued, and largely ignored by Wall Street institutions and big Indian mutual funds. Adani Enterprises stock, for example, fell only 1.5% on Wednesday, though Adani Transmission fell 9%.

Adani Enterprises stock, for example, fell only 1.5% on Wednesday, though Adani Transmission fell 9%. Adani Enterprises, controlled by India’s richest man, Gautam Adani, is due on Jan. 25 to announce the anchor investors in a 200 billion rupee ($2.4 billion) follow-on issue, the largest in India by a private company.
Shares of Adani’s companies have surged in the last few years, making him Asia’s richest man. In 2021, shares in Adani’s companies tumbled after The Economic Times newspaper said that foreign funds that hold stakes worth billions of dollars were frozen by the country’s National Securities Depository. Its report on the Adani Group comes at a sensitive time. Later this week, Adani Enterprises, the conglomerate’s flagship company, is aiming to raise 200 billion rupees ($2.5 billion) by issuing new shares. Last year, CreditSights, a research firm owned by Fitch Group, published a report about Adani Group titled “Deeply Overleveraged” in which it expressed strong concerns about its debt-funded growth plans.
Hindenburg, known for having shorted electric truck maker Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) and Twitter, said it holds short positions in Adani companies through U.S.-traded bonds and non-Indian-traded derivative instruments. Shares in Adani Transmission (ADAI.NS) fell 9%, Adani Ports And Special Economic Zone (APSE.NS) slipped 6.3% and Adani Enterprises ended down 1.5%. Adani Group's total gross debt in the financial year ended March 31, 2022, rose 40% to 2.2 trillion rupees. Refinitiv data shows debt at Adani Group's seven key listed Adani companies exceeds equity, with debt at Adani Green Energy Ltd (ADNA.NS) exceeding equity by more than 2,000%. Hindenburg also said it was concerned that a high proportion of equity held by promoters or key shareholders in Adani Group listed companies has been pledged for loans.
MUMBAI, Jan 21 (Reuters) - India's Adani Group, controlled by billionaire Gautam Adani, plans to spin off more businesses by 2028 and dismisses any debt concerns, the group's chief financial officer told Reuters. The Adani group has spun off its power, coal, transmission and green energy business in the last five-seven years. The company plans to use the money to fund green hydrogen projects, airport facilities and Greenfield expressways, besides paring its debt, it earlier said. CreditSights, part of the Fitch Group, described the Adani Group in September 2022, as "overleveraged" and said it had "concerns" over its debt. "Nobody has raised debt concerns to us.
The next few months could therefore find more developers starting to miss offshore debt obligations, while many developers that have already defaulted will continue struggling to pin down a restructuring plan for viable long-term repayments. This year, Chinese developers' maturing offshore debt will total $141 billion, up from $120.7 billion in 2022, Refinitiv data showed. Since November, it has completed two rounds of share placements in Hong Kong, raising HK$8.6 billion ($1.10 billion). An executive at a developer that has defaulted on offshore debt said the company would speed up its debt restructuring process this year as onshore banks have offered to extend new loans once a revamp is complete. NEW DELHI, Nov 7 (Reuters) - India's ports-to-energy conglomerate Adani Group continues to seek strategic equity partners aligned with its long-term investment strategy, debt research firm CreditSights said in a report, flagging concern over the Group's elevated leverage. The Group, led by Asia's richest person Gautam Adani, is looking to expand its presence in power generation and infrastructure and ventured into cement-making operations earlier this year. Chairman Adani said late in September that the group will invest more than $100 billion over the next decade, most of it in the energy transition business. Adani Group did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. CreditSights added that the group continues to seek strategic equity partners that are aligned with its long-term investment strategy, such as sovereign wealth funds, and also maintains strong relationships with existing partners.
BENGALURU, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Indian billionaire Gautam Adani's group plans to raise at least $10 billion in new debt through the next year to refinance large borrowings and fund projects in its pipeline, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, quoting people in the know. The Adani Group plans to use several vehicles including foreign currency debt and green bonds to raise up to $6 billion to swap its current high-interest debt with lower-cost borrowings and deploy the rest for project financing, according to the report. It added that the effort could begin as early as the current December quarter. An Adani Enterprises (ADEL.NS) spokesperson did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The report comes more than a month after debt research firm CreditSights, a part of the Fitch Group, said it had concerns about the Adani group's overall debt levels, at a time when it is looking to expand aggressively.
